Charged with the goal of becoming a worldwide leader in fuel efficiency, Chevrolet debuts the 2009 Silverado Hybrid at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show. The new Silverado Hybrid uses GM's advanced 2-Mode system. (The previous Silverado "mild" Hybrid could only generate electrical power for auxulirary use.) The new 2-Mode Hybrid system results in a 40-percent increase in city fuel economy, and 25-percent overall. It will be available in late 2008.
The 2-Mode Hybrid system consists of a 6.0L gas V-8 engine capable of running on half its cylinders in for economical V-4 operation in addition to an electrically variable transmission powered by a 300-volt battery. At speeds under 30 mph the truck can operate under electric power alone. When coasting or applying brakes, the electric motors in the hybrid system operate as a generators to store power in the 300-volt battery.
The truck uses an electrically-driven compressor to run the HVAC system so that the system may operate under battery power. The power-steering is also driven by electrical power, using a 42-volt variable-assist motor.
The Silverado Hybrid is a fully capable truck, with the ability to tow up to 6,100 pounds. The electrically variable transmission provides smooth operation, and is capable of running on all-electric mode with tremendous torque at low speeds even when towing a trailer. The transmission offers grade braking as well as manual up and down shift control.
The Silverado Hybrid will be offered in the Crew Cab body style only, with both 2WD and 4WD configurations. The truck receives special 5-spoke 18x8-inch machined aluminum wheels and rolls on special 265/65R18 tires designed for reduced noise.
The truck includes many safety features including front and side curtain airbags, StabiliTrak stability control, as well as a locking rear differential and trailering package. The truck receives the smooth Z85 suspension, and a new hydraulic body mount on the passenger side of the frame for increase ride quality.
To increase aerodynamics, the Silverado Hybrid uses a slightly deeper front air dam, and also includes a bed cover to reduce drag. The three-section cover can be folded or removed easily. With the added economy of the hybrid system, the truck is capable of traveling more than 500 miles on with a full tank of gas (26 gallons).
Many additional steps have been taken to decrease noise in the hybrid system, resulting in an nearly silent operation under battery power. The hybrid system's battery pack is located in a compartment beneath the rear seat. Its variable-speed internal fan operates in quiet mode at low speed to minimize noise. The exhaust and intake have been specially tuned to reduce interior noise as well as provide pleasing sound when running in reduced power mode
